Advances to protective war gear are continually being made to better serve military troops during times of warfare.

Governments and scientists are constantly experimenting with new technologies and designs to protect soldiers on the frontline. An important aspect of protective armor is tactical vests. Tactical vests were created to protect soldiers from dangerous projectiles. Aside from soldiers, special officers such as SWAT team units also use tactical vests.

One standard tactical vest primarily used by police officers and SWAT team units is the Blackhawk tactical vest. Blackhawk tactical vests are black tactical vests made with specialized 1000 denier Nytaneon material, a highly durable and highly elastic material ideal for protective vests.

Blackhawk vests come in different varieties, including the Blackhawk Omega Medic vest and the Blackhawk Tactical float vest. The medic vest is equipped with multiple pockets large enough to fit a variety of medical supplies, including 1,000 ml IV bags. The Blackhawk Tactical float vest is created with floatable foam-filled panels. The vest also contains room for an additional hydration system and an emergency drag handle to prevent drowning.

The standard tactical vest used by active soldiers is the interceptor body armor. The interceptor body armor is an outer tactical vest that is more effective than the formerly-used bullet proof vests. The former standard tactical vest was the PASGT (Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops). Interceptor body armor comes equipped with removable Small Arms Protective Inserts (SAPI), neck, throat, shoulder and groin protectors. Interceptor body armor is lined with finely woven Kevlar KM2 aramid, a flame resistant fiber. The total weight of the interceptor with the additional protective parts is 45 lbs. Although, the inceptor adds extra protection, some soldiers have complained about hindered mobility due to the increased weight of the interceptor tactical vest.

New developments in tactical vests include the ballistic modular tactical vests. Modular tactical vests were created to increase the capabilities of the interceptor body armor. They include newer additions, such as a quick release handle to remove the vest in case of emergency, additional pouches along the SAPIs, a rifle bolster to aid in holding the rifle, and special wiring channels for increased communication. The modular tactical vest weighs one pound more than the interceptor body armor, though it is designed to more evenly distribute the weight on the soldier's torso. Production of 60,000 units has been ordered by the US Marine Corps slated for release in February 2007.
