The Kalashnikov assault rifle, known to most in the Western world as the AK47, was one of the most influential developments in hand-held weaponry in the 20th century.
It was conceived by never-heard-of-before tank commander Mikhail Kalashnikov during the Battle of Bryansk in World War II. He thought of an idea for a gun so simple, while at the same time so revolutionary, it would change the way war would be conceived to this day.
The AK47 has been so devastatingly important in shaping world events that it is featured on the currency of many countries, as well as on the flags of others. Held above the head of countless militiamen, rebels and insurgents around the world—from South America to South Africa—the AK47 has become one of the world's most notorious and effective combat weapons. In many countries the cost of an AK47 is cheaper than the cost of a live chicken, so it is no wonder the AK47 is responsible for the deaths of more than a quarter of a million people per year.
Its prestige comes from being a weapon that works. Though it suffers from an intense recoil and accuracy problems from certain distances, its tried-and-true nature, as well as its cheap price, keeps it a staple among official armies and insurgents alike.
The AK 47 can be found throughout the world in a variety of different models. Gun collectors and afficianados search out different versions of the AK 47 for their gun cases. For these people, there are numerous AK47 accessories to be found. For more accuracy, a sight or scope can be added to the AK47, which is usually accurate up to 300 feet. For a better grip on the gun, AK47 pistol grips can be added as well as a handguard.
The intense recoil of an AK47 is known by all who have fired one. Adding an adjustable or folding stock and butt pad to the back of an AK47 for additional support while firing may make the gun more wieldy. Other AK47 parts include special triggers, lasers, frontgrip flashlight mounts, and bipods for stability if the gun is to be fired from the ground.
As far as the legality of owning an AK47 in the United States is concerned, machine guns assembled domestically prior to 1986 and imported prior to 1968 may be transferred between civilians in accordance with state and federal law. It is illegal to import fully automatic weapons for civilian sales and possession per the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934 as well as the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986.
Before assuming any automatic weapon is legal in your state, check your state's laws. Many states outlaw the private possession of fully-automatic firearms even if the weapon gains NFA approval.

Many gun enthusiasts enjoy reading up on classic guns and gaining a broadened perspective on how they have shaped and continue to shape our world. If you are a collector, make sure your actions stay within local, state and federal laws. If you are unsure of a particular law, make sure to get it explained to you by a professional. Ignorance will not save you from penalties if you commit a crime. Be safe; it is much better than being sorry.
