One of the most important advancements in modern weaponry was the development of the 9mm pistol cartridge.

The 9mm Parabellum pistol cartridge was developed by the German weapons manufacturers Deutsche Waffen and Munitionsfabriken (DWM). It was developed as a more powerful and efficient version of the 7.65mm Luger Parabellum cartridge.

The Luger Parabellum was named for Austrian weapons designer Georg Luger. Luger volunteered for military service early in his life and became an expert marksman during his time in the military. During his service, he developed an interest in gun manufacturing, particularly the automatic loading systems involved. After his time in the military, Luger worked with many different weapons manufacturers until he created the Luger pistol. The Luger pistol would become the standard used for the DWM.

Modern 9mm pistols and 9mm revolvers are updated versions of Luger's original design. Named for its measurements, 9mm ammo was more effective because of its size and the material used. Brass was the most common material used for 9mm weapons from 1902 until aluminum replaced as the most commonly-used material. Aluminum continues to be the material used today. Some countries have experimented with steel but have found that the material is not as effective. Plastics are also a popular material used for 9mm ammo.

Benefits of 9mm ammo include its small size and low amount of resources needed to manufacture. Many argue one downside to 9mm ammo is that it creates a small wound hold when using non-expanding bullets; some soldiers have reported being shot with a 9mm bullet in the arms or legs without noticing. The bullets also tend to over-penetrate their target.

Today 9mm ammo cartridges are used in weapons varying from 9mm rifles, 9mm pistols, 9mm and 9mm revolvers. 9mm ammo is the most widely used pistol cartridge for everything from hunting, warfare and competitive shooting. Some popular 9mm rifles include the AR15 and AK47 9mm rifles as well as the Uzi 9mm rifles.

One of the most popular 9mm pistols is the Browning hi-power semi-automatic 9mm pistol. This pistol was invented by American firearms designer John Browning in 1922. This pistol was an advancement for 9mm weapons because it was the first gun capable of holding a double-column magazine of 9mm ammo, capable of holding up to 14 cartridges of ammo. 9mm pistols, particularly the M9 9mm Beretta pistol, were widely used by police all over the world throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
